2020 Olof Johnell Science Award winner M McClung

Today, the 2020 International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Olof Johnell Science Award was presented to Dr Michael R. McClung, MD, FACP, FACE. Dr McClung, who is the Founding Director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Center in Portland, is an internationally recognized clinician, researcher, and educator in osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases.

The IOF Olof Johnell Award is named after the late Professor Olof Johnell, a renowned investigator whose legacy includes major contributions to the field including in epidemiologic research, guideline development and policy. Presented annually, the Olof Johnell Award recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of osteoporosis in a scientific or policy implementation area worldwide. 

Presenting the Award today at the opening of the IOF-ESCEO World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, IOF President Cyrus Cooper stated:

“On behalf of IOF, I am exceedingly pleased to present this prestigious Award to Michael McClung, one of the field’s most respected clinical researchers who is internationally recognized for his contributions in education and guideline development. Among his many notable achievements, he was involved in the early development of bone density testing, has contributed to the availability of therapies for osteoporosis and has participated in the development of clinical guidelines for societies in several countries. We are greatly honoured to count Dr McClung as a member of the IOF Board and Committee of Scientific Advisors.”   

Michael McClung is the founding director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Center in Portland, Oregon and is a Professorial Fellow at the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health and Ageing, Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. He graduated from Rice University in Houston and from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After his training in Internal Medicine at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, he completed a fellowship in Endocrinology at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Since then, he has held several academic appointments and has been actively involved in the training of young physicians at the Oregon Health & Science University and at Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland. At the Oregon Osteoporosis Center, Dr McClung has had an active clinical practice, took part in multiple educational initiatives involving the training of young physicians, and was an investigator in many clinical trials evaluating the effects of therapeutic agents. He is well known internationally as a speaker/teacher and has been involved in the development of clinical guidelines for several national osteoporosis societies. Dr McClung has been a member of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors for more than 20 years. He currently serves on the Boards of IOF and the North American Menopause Society.
