32World Osteoporosis Day
- News room - Latin America Region
October 21st marked a significant milestone for public health in Minas Gerais, Brazil, with the proposal of Bill No. 2,787/2024 at the State Legislative Assembly. This bill establishes the State Week for the Prevention and Control of Osteoporosis, to be held annually during the week of October 20th, in observance of World Osteoporosis Day.
Presented by Congressman Lucas Lasmar, the law aims to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and disease prevention.
During the meeting, representatives from the Ministry of Health, the State Health Department, and the Public Prosecutor's Office discussed key actions to strengthen comprehensive care for osteoporosis patients. Dr. Bruno Muzzi, a member of the IOF's Committee of Scientific Advisors, shared his expertise and insights on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and proper treatment.
The bill has several key objectives:
- Promote awareness of early detection and treatment of osteoporosis.
- Conduct educational campaigns to disseminate information about risk factors and preventive measures.
- Encourage physical activity and healthy eating habits.
- Facilitate access to free or subsidized bone densitometry exams.
- Involve healthcare professionals, schools, universities, and civil society organizations in promoting activities during the week.
Mónica Caló, IOF Regional Manager for Latin America, stated, “We firmly believe that initiatives like this, which actively involve all
sectors, pave the way for a healthier and more active society. The creation of this State Week will not only increase awareness but also drive the implementation of concrete actions that will benefit thousands of people. We thank everyone involved in this effort and, from the IOF Latin America office, remain committed to promoting bone health throughout our region."
IOF celebrates these collaborative efforts and applauds the inclusion of osteoporosis in the public health agenda. Networked action between institutions and society is crucial to advancing the fight against a disease that, when left untreated, can be debilitating.
Collaborative work yields results! Let’s keep advancing in the prevention and control of osteoporosis.
